1950s-60s
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in suburban New Jersey, near New York City. Took up flute at age 7 and guitar at age 13, performing in bands and orchestras throughout elementary and high school years.
1970s
After studies in humanities (including history) and social sciences at Columbia University and 5 years as a pre-school teacher in New York City, turned to arranging and playing music as a singer and saxophonist, began studies in business administration.
1980s
After a move to California and completion of studies at California State University, became a specialist in public-sector recruitment and employment testing. Enjoyed horseback riding and sea-kayaking.
Following further study at the University of California, Berkeley, and John F. Kennedy University in Walnut Creek, California, changed specialties within the personnel field, becoming a training specialist.
1990s
Finally giving precedence to a long-dormant interest in teaching English as a foreign language, took EFL training at UC, Berkeley and a practicum with Trans-World Teachers (RSA method) in San Francisco. Subsequently moved to Prague and joined the Electrical Engineering faculty at ČVUT (Czech Technical University). Married, built a house, started a family.
2000s
Have now taught here for 16 years, not only in schools (ČVUT, Heyrovského Gymnázium) but also in homes, businesses, and hospitals. Past students have included sculptors, heart surgeons and military intelligence officers; but my appointment at Open Gate will certainly be the most challenging and potentially the most fulfilling post of my career.
Oh … and I’m still playing the guitar.
