EDIE
What is it?
The Duke of Edinburgh's award is a voluntary non-competitive program which helps young people from 14 to 25 years of age with personal development and active use of leisure time. Young people in this program systematically improve themselves in three areas: recreational sports, non sport skills and service to others. In addition, part of the award is an expedition and preparation for it. The Duke of Edinburgh's program offers three levels of difficulty - bronze, silver and gold. These levels are in principle different in total time, duration, and intensity of the final expedition. Usually, these levels follow each other, ie the bronze award holder can apply to silver, etc.
Why at Opengate?
The philosophy of the Duke of Edinburgh's award naturally resonates with the philosophy of Opengate, it is based on principles of experiential learning, the planning of the students activities for themselves, their co-operation, mutual understanding and tolerance. It is also very important for participants to develop their abilities of self-reflection and self-esteem. All of these principles also correspond with Opengate's principles so involvement in this program is quite a logical step for our school.
How at Opengate
Our school offers all three levels of this award, bronze, silver and gold. Achieving Bronze level takes 3 months and our students have a chance to sign up for this award every February if they study in kvinta, sexta or septima. Achieving the Silver level requires six months and the students can apply for this level if they previously completed a bronze level. They have to sign up for this level by the end of December. The gold standard is available only to holders of silver certificates and the students have to apply for it by the end of September while in septima. Meeting all the criteria of this award is the most challenging and takes at least 12 months. All applications shall be made by e-mail to the e/mail address of coordinator of this award which is michalik@opengate.cz.
5/3/2011 - Geocaching as a preparation for EDIE expedition
During the EDIE program we have learnt to use GPS navigation. To test our skills we used the network of hidden boxes called Geocaching.
