After School
Each year OPEN GATE’s offer of extracurricular activities contains several dozen of the most diverse activities and is modified according to the students’ interests. The following clubs and activities are regularly available: arts (solo and choir singing, guitar, piano, drums, scenic and modern dance, belly dancing, music groups, theatre, film club); sports (equestrianism, tennis, floorball, yoga, football, basketball, volleyball, conditioning swimming and strength training, kickboxing, aerobics, athletics); academics (additional language instruction – Japanese, Chinese); natural-science activities; debate league; extracurricular academic projects; journalism (student magazine).
Extracurricular activities are conceived for our students as an integrated programme that fulfils the perquisites for meeting the requirements of a British programme called The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The following four spectra of skills are evaluated within this programme: Creative skills in the areas of, for example, ceramics, guitar, drama or culinary arts; or skills in which physical performance plays a substantial role – for example, equestrianism, dance and floorball; skills demonstrated in socially beneficial activities – for example, care for the school’s environment, environmental clean-up in the village and forest, visitation of sick children and senior citizens in retirement homes; skills important for coping with difficult situations and requiring greater independence, for example on expeditions where students demonstrate their ability to find their way in the wilderness and to travel and dwell in difficult terrain, such as in the case of camping.
