Geography
The world which we talk about in Geography is now closer to us than ever before, thanks to modern information technologies. We can bring the whole world into our lessons and show the students how powerful, interesting, entertaining and useful geography is.
We observe the relationship between people, places where they live and the environment which surrounds them; on the other hand we look at the world as a globally complex environment. We discuss its problems and our main target, among others, is to develop students' motivation and involve them in solving these problems.
IB Geography At Open Gate Boarding School
Introduction
The IB Geography course challenges students to make links between location and lifestyle, environment and economic activity and facts with projections for the future.
The course has immense educational potential, taking students into social, economic and political thought and argument. Its purpose is to integrate human and physical topics providing the potential for young people to make sense of the world, themselves and their place within it. It aims to equip students with the skills of enquiry to explore both the dynamics of the environment and society. Using appropriate case studies from countries around the world, the course seeks to promote a sense of cultural identity and global mindedness.
IB Geography also includes the numerical and analytical skills essential for the effective study of Geography. Fieldwork is an essential part of this course.
Assessment Criteria
The students in the IB Geography course are assessed on their ability fully comprehend global issues and their environmental, economic, social and cultural impact around the world. Their subject knowledge is tested in the form of short answer questions which require both written and visual responses. They are responsible for forming well thought out conclusions based on information that can be illustrated in the form of various graphs, tables and charts.
A major component in the IB Geography course is the ability to work in teams on several long term projects. The students work is based on the amount of research that is done and how that research has been combined with their own creative and unique ideas. The class projects are designed to enhance both their research skills as well as their ability to work with others in solving complex problems and situations.
The final component for the IB Geography course is the Internal Assessment which requires each student to complete an individual fieldwork study. The project is a mixture of data collecting, research study, graphing and witnessing conclusive results. Upon completion of the projects each student will have realized the experience of formulating an educated opinion in the form of a hypothesis and then testing, through a variety of research methods, the validity of their claim.
