International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP)

IB World School

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) is a demanding two year study programme for students from 16 to 19 years of age (Septima and Octava). The IB DP is acknowledged by universities worldwide, including the most prestigious ones and the IB DP substitutes for some entrance examinations.

The “lingua francas” of this program at Open Gate are Czech and English. The students also have to pass some of the IB DP exams during the course itself. If they are strongly profiled during their studies they do not have to sit for the complete set of exams from six subjects, but they can choose one or two groups in which they want to assert themselves. In this scenario, they gain an IB certificate.

Thanks to their verified objectivity and demand, the IB DP exams carry an exceptional value. They are directed worldwide from one regional center in Cardiff. The main center for the European, African and Middle Eastern region is in Haag in Holland.

The student may choose Visual Arts, or doesn't have to choose any subject from this group and can substitute it with a subject from groups 3–5. Open Gate offers the sitting of Spanish, French or German (at higher, standard or advanced levels).

The Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS

The students must write an extended essay (4000 words maximum) under the supervision of the teacher and simultaneously study Theory of Knowledge (TOK). The aim is to encourage the students to think critically and obtain a philosophical reflection of the cornerstones of knowledge in the subjects studied. The students gain bonus points (three at the maximum), which are then added to the final sum of points from the six subjects.

The students must also attend CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) which supports the development of their individualities apart from academic studies. The program may include participation in theatre production, expeditions, work with homeless citizens etc.

The method of evaluation

The maximum number of points which students may gain in the IB DP is 45 (the maximum from one subject is seven points, thus 42 points for six subjects plus three bonus points for Theory of Knowledge and the extended essay).

During the two year course it is necessary to undergo three graded exams in most subjects. However, many subjects are evaluated differently. For example in natural sciences, students are evaluated by the laboratory experiments they create, in languages they are evaluated by oral presentations, in visual art it is the quality of their work that is evaluated etc. Evaluation is based on precisely given criteria and every student's accomplishment is evaluated according to already defined levels of success. The students' work from subjects in the IB DP are from 70–80 percent evaluated by external assessors.

It is possible to demonstrate this on the requirements of Cambridge University as an example of what is taken for good results. In order for candidates to consider studying at this university, it is expected that they gain 40–42 points from IB DP. For candidates to gain the IB DP, a 24 point minimum is needed.

The International Baccalaureate is a demanding exam, which gives students a chance to be accepted at even the most prestigious universities without having to pass entrance exams.
