Enrolment and Transfers

Open Gate Primary School has five years, offering a lower primary education. Most of our primary school students go on to apply for a place at Open Gate’s eight-year grammar school. Of course, they also have the option of applying to a different eight-year grammar school or an upper primary school.

Knowledge of English is not essential for acceptance into our primary school.

It is also possible to enrol a child older than preschool age, but only if a place is available in the relevant year. Register now and we will inform you of the next steps in good time.

The compulsory primary school attendance enrolment procedure for the 2020/2021 school year will take place on 1-3 April 2020 and on 6-8 April 2020 at the Open Gate Primary School (Na Návsi 5, Babice), the Year One capacity of which is 21 pupils.
On the basis of an emergency measure adopted by the Czech Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, regarding the organisation of enrolment in compulsory primary school attendance of all founders for the 2020/2021 school year, dated 18 March 2020, and in compliance with the valid legislation (Act No. 561/2004 Coll., on pre-school, basic, secondary, tertiary professional and other education at schools and school facilities and Section 3a of Decree No. 48/2005 Coll., on basic education and some aspects of the implementation of the compulsory education), the school’s headmistress states the Open Gate Primary School admission criteria for the 2020/2021 school year as follows:

Formal part (fulfilment of statutory requirements)
Motivational part
1.    The child’s legal guardians share the same educational approach of the school (max. 40 points),
2.    the applicant’s sibling is a pupil at the Open Gate Primary School (10 points).
The enrolment procedure is divided into two parts – formal and motivational.

A. Formal part
The formal part of the enrolment procedure requires the child’s legal guardian to file the Application by a Legal Guardian for Primary Education Admission  (appended PDF) with a copy of the child’s birth certificate appended to the application (a certified copy thereof is not required):
  • via the school’s data box (ID: abvrh5r),
  • via e-mail with a recognised electronic signature (lepicova@opengate.cz),
  • via post (Open Gate, Na Návsi 5, 251 01 Babice),
  • in person to the registry of the school, located at the lower gate reception (Babice village square entryway). In case of filing the application in person, a responsible member of the school’s staff shall verify the data in the completed Application by a Legal Guardian for Primary Education Admission pursuant to the child’s birth certificate brought by the legal guardian to the enrolment.

Registry opening hours:
Wednesday, 1 April 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Thursday, 2 April 9 a.m. – 12 a.m.
Friday, 3 April 9 a.m. – 12 a.m.
Monday, 6 April 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Tuesday, 7 April 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Wednesday, 8 April 9 a.m. – 12 a.m.
In relation to the current measures, legal guardians are to enter the registry premises individually. Please comply with the school’s adopted measures.
B. Motivational part
With regard to the emergency measures adopted by the Czech Minister of Education, Youth and Sports regarding the organisation of compulsory primary school attendance enrolment of all founders for the 2020/2021 school year, the motivational part of the enrolment procedure requiring the personal presence of the child has been waived. As a consequence, only the part focused on sharing the same educational approach by the child's legal guardians shall take place.
B1: The child’s legal guardians share the same educational approach of the school
The procedure of assessing the compliance of the educational approach of the legal guardians and the Open Gate Primary School shall take place in two parts.
First part:
The child’s legal guardians shall send a motivational essay (max. 500 words) to Markéta Lepičová, lepicova@opengate.cz, no later than on 1 April 2020, 8:00 a.m. The essay shall provide answers to the following questions:

1.    Why is the Open Gate Primary School your school of choice?
2.    Explain why is it your child who should be admitted to our school?
3.    What do you expect from our school?
4.    What are the weaknesses and strengths of your child?
5.    Have you considered the financial burden of the school?
The second part shall take place in the form of a video call with at least one legal guardian and the child and shall not exceed 10 minutes. In case of technical difficulties, this part shall take place via a conference call on the GSM network.
B2: Applicant’s sibling is a pupil at the Open Gate Primary School

In case compelling reasons prevent you from taking part in the motivational part of the enrolment procedure on the agreed date and time, we ask you to please communicate this matter to Markéta Lepičová, lepicova@opengate.cz. You will be granted an alternative time on 9 April 2020.

Prior to the issuance of a decision, legal guardians shall be entitled to view the file at the school’s registry upon prior agreement with Petra Kobrová, kobrova@opengate.cz, on 9 April 2020, 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

The list of children (under numbers assigned for the purposes of the enrolment procedure) admitted to compulsory school attendance for the 2020/2021 school year shall be published on 10 April 2020, after 2 p.m., on the website of the school (www.opengate.cz).
We are delighted that you have shown an interest in our school. We regard it greatly important that the school and you become the best of companions on your children's path towards education.
Other relevant information:
The legal guardian of the party to the proceedings (the child) may file an appeal against the decision of the deputy headmistress, Petra Kobrová, within 15 days, the period of which starts on the day following the delivery of a copy of the Decision on Non-Admission to Compulsory School Attendance. The appeal shall be filed by the legal guardian to the regional authority of the relevant region pursuant to the location of the school via the headmaster of a specific primary school. Parents / legal guardians are neither a party to the proceedings on admission of the child, nor an intervener; however, they are the child’s representative in administrative proceedings. This implies that the appeal against the school headmaster’s decision may only be filed by the parents on behalf of the child, not the parents themselves.
On the basis of Section 37 (2) of the Educational Act, we would like to inform you about the possibility to defer compulsory school attendance. If the child is not physically or mentally mature for school attendance commencement and if its custodian applies in writing at the time of the school enrolment period pursuant to Section 36 (4) of the School Act, then a school headmaster may postpone the child´s compulsory school attendance commencement by one year on the condition that the application is supported by the attached assessment of the competent school advisory office and a specialised physician or clinical psychologist. The beginning of compulsory school attendance may not be postponed any later than the beginning of the school year of the child’s 8th birthday.
In case the deferral of compulsory school attendance is granted, we would like to inform you about the obligation of pre-school education of the child in a kindergarten or a preparatory class in primary schools.
The main language of instruction at the Open Gate Primary School is the Czech language; English is used in the English Language subject via the CLIL method, and also in the Arts and Culture subject.
In case your child comes from a different language (or otherwise disadvantaged) background, the school offers individual help to such children in the form of monthly consultations with the children and regular communication with the legal guardians of such children. In case a child is admitted to compulsory school attendance and in case they are interested in such support, the application on such support shall be filed by the legal guardians of the child to the deputy headmistress of the primary school in written form.
The Open Gate Primary School also comprises a Counselling Centre, inclusive of its own educational-psychological counselling services. The Counselling Centre employs a team of psychologists, special pedagogues, speech therapists, coaches, psychotherapists and art therapists who also cooperate with external experts and expert organisations. This added value of the school allows us to effectively educate our pupils with special educational needs; we can further offer a system of supportive measures, closer cooperation with the pupil’s family, the possibility of educating the child pursuant to an individual educational plan, and the possibility to regrade the child to a higher year.
Regarding the fact that the commencement of your child’s compulsory school attendance is less than five months away, you can use the time to help your child, especially by doing the following:

  • Pay focused attention to your child – when communicating with your child do not focus on any other activity, show the child your interest, listen to the child carefully, and display helpfulness and amiable behaviour.
  • Tell stories and read to your child – TV and video cannot replace a human voice and personal contact.
  • Assign small tasks and housework to your child – cultivate their independence and responsibility, support their motor skills.
  • Develop knowledge about the life of humans, animals and plants – not only does it expand their general knowledge, but also their vocabulary.
  • Choose suitable games and activities and play along – construction sets, puzzles, story pictures and working with small art materials develop their knowledge and creativity. Your participation strengthens the emotional maturity of your child.
  • Develop their spatial orientation and knowledge of terms such as up, down, on the left, on the right, in front, behind – it has a significant impact on the basics of writing, reading and counting.
  • Provide for suitable physical activities and healthy cuisine – nature is a big gymnasium, it can also be beneficial for you.
  • Prepare your child for changes in your daily routine relating to school attendance – waking up in the morning, removing afternoon naps; a regular bed time can decrease the daily stress that children, legal guardians and teachers face. It prepares the child for the new experiences that accompanies school attendance.
  • Create social situations which teach the child to deal with other people – obeying basic social rules in dealing with other people, running small errands, overcoming the fear of communicating in an unknown environment, etc.

In this connection, we would like to familiarise you with the Ten Rules for Parents of Pre-School Children document issued by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.
