Kvarta Students in Prague: The Jewish Museum, Kafka, and a Literary Tour of the City

Kvarta students took part in an educational programme at the Jewish Museum in Prague entitled Reflections – Perpetrators, Rescuers and the Others. The programme encouraged them to think critically about the roles individuals assumed during times of persecution, about personal responsibility, and about the difficult choices people face in extreme situations. The visit naturally built on this year’s curriculum, in which students have explored Holocaust-related literature in both Czech and English classes.

The afternoon programme was organised in cooperation with the Czech Department, which prepared a “literary walk” through sites in the city centre connected to the rich tradition of Czech literature. Students focused on the lives and works of Franz Kafka and Petr Ginz, and also engaged with Old Town legends. Prague thus became for them not only a place of memory, but also a living map of stories that have shaped Czech culture.

The excursion provided space for focused learning, thoughtful questions and shared discussion, while demonstrating how meaningfully history, literature and civic awareness can be connected beyond the classroom.
