Prima and Tercie Students Celebrated National Poetry Month

This year once again, Open Gate celebrated National Poetry Month, an American tradition observed each April, in English classes. Throughout the month, Prima and Tercie students explored poetry, discovered different poetic forms, and became familiar with the works of well-known English-language poets. The programme also encouraged original writing and the courage to share personal texts with others.

Under the guidance of their teacher Stephen Troy Witt, students examined how poetry works with rhythm, imagery, and emotion. During lessons, they read and interpreted poems by various authors while also trying their hand at writing poetry in English themselves. Many discovered that poetry is not only something found in textbooks, but also a space for creativity, humour, and personal expression.

The highlight of the month was a shared poetry recital held on April 27. Each student selected a poem to present to the group. Some chose works studied in class, while others performed their own original writing. The audience heard poems that were playful, thoughtful, and deeply personal, all within a warm and supportive atmosphere.

Once again, the Poetry Event reminded us that poetry holds a meaningful place at Open Gate and that a foreign language can become a powerful tool for expressing one’s own thoughts and emotions authentically.
