Social responsibility | Volunteering at Open Gate School
We guide Open Gate School students to help others.
All Open Gate students have opportunities to join the volunteering program and lend a helping hand wherever needed. Examples include care for ill children and senior citizens, or visiting them at their homes and at care facilities for senior citizens, but also cleaning outdoors, keeping and tidying the school’s campus and many other activities beneficial for the community. A unique advantage of all the activities is the fact that students learn how to tackle complicated social situations and develop a feeling of responsibility for their environment, thereby acquiring the necessary social intelligence. This quality is highly appreciated at the adult age and it is also the basis of a number of professions in which the students want to pursue their future careers.
We currently work with the following institutions and establishments:
The Mukařov home for senior citizens: We cooperate with the retirement home in Mukařov since 2012/2013 school year; students prepare a series of reading workshops for the senior residents. Every two weeks, a group of students visit the home and read favourite books to the residents.
The Pod Kavčí Skálou home for senior citizens in Říčany near Prague: Open Gate has been cooperating with the home for senior citizens in Říčany for several years. Initially, students played various club games with the senior residents, sang for them, and painted with them. In the last two years they have performed a series of sketches called Travel Mania with the home’s residents – students help the senior residents travel outside the Czech Republic at least virtually, with the help of narration, photographs, and their own experiences. The residents were therefore able to visit India, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and many other countries in this way.
The Oliva Children’s Sanatorium in Říčany near Prague (nicknamed ‘Olivovna’): For several years, Open Gate students have been visiting Olivovna on a regular basis to help children with foreign language learning.
The Mukařov primary school and kindergarten: In the 2012/2013 school year, we successfully started cooperation with the school and kindergarten in neighbouring Mukařov. Here, our students help out during English lessons and teach elementary English vocabulary for some topics: colours, animals, people, family, etc.
The Stránčice primary: With this primary school we started cooperation since the academic year 2014/2015. Here, our students manage the English Language Club for the youngest students, teaching them elementary English vocabulary for some topics: colours, animals, people, family, etc.
The Mnichovice primary: With this primary school we started cooperation since the academic year 2014/2015. Here, our students manage the English Language Club, just like in Stránčice, for the youngest students, teaching them elementary English vocabulary for some topics: colours, animals, people, family, etc.
The Kolovraty kindergarten: We have been working with Kolovraty for past two years. Here our students help not only with the language club but also during morning playtime.
The Benice kindergarten: Since 2014/2015 academic year we started to cooperate with Benice nursery. Here students of Open Gate help not only with the language but also during afternoon playtime.
Babice: Students are aware of the importance of taking care of their environment. We therefore cooperate with the Babice Municipal Authority and help with refuse collection and various events (for example, with the organization of running races) in Babice.
India: Since 2012 a group of Septima students go on an Exchange trip to India to Dirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai where students help to restore remote villages, infrastructure, and also with education – teaching various life and working skills such as work on a PC, or with English language.
Banát: Since 2013 a group of Septima students visit Romania in order to learn about life of the Czech community in this country. The main base is in Eibentál but the students also visit other villages in the area of Banat where our students donate bicycles or computers to the local children.
Open Gate: Open Gate students are aware also of the importance of helping each other. Therefore to participate in volunteering and helping others they don’t have to go far. They for example help out in the school library, tutor younger students, help out in the primary school afterschool care, or organise various events such as Valentine, Christmas diner, or International kids Day.
Světlušky: For many yearshave been students of Open Gate taking part in the national charity event. For blind and visually impaired people and September 2015 will be no exception.
Christmas Star: Christmas stars were first sold at Open Gate at Christmas 2013 and ever since the advent time is link with this event “Christmas Star” is a charity project organised by the non-profit organization Sance in cooperation with hospital staff, friends, and families of affected children. Fundraising will go to the oncology department of the Children’s Clinic of Olomouc University Hospital.
